Anambra Police Apprehend Criminal Gang Targeting Okada Riders in Ihiala
In a significant breakthrough, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested a five-member criminal gang, including a female suspect, for luring commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders, to isolated locations where they are robbed of their motorcycles and personal belongings. The arrests were made during an early morning operation by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu, leading to the recovery of a firearm, stolen motorcycles, and other incriminating items.
Details of the Arrest and Gang Operations
The police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a press statement, identifying the suspects as Sunday Chukwudebele, 22; Adaobi Udeze, 26; Chimezie Ifebi, 35; Kelvin Chukwuejike, 28; and Uzi Chukwuejike Williams Umeh, 26. Preliminary investigations revealed that the gang had been operating within Ihiala and surrounding areas, specifically targeting Okada riders.
SP Ikenga explained that the female suspect, Adaobi, played a pivotal role by posing as a passenger to deceive unsuspecting motorcycle operators. She would direct them to lonely routes and hideouts, where other gang members would emerge to attack the victims, dispossessing them of their motorcycles and valuables. This method had enabled the gang to carry out numerous robbery operations before their apprehension.
Community Reactions and Praise for Police Efforts
Residents and Okada riders in Ihiala have expressed widespread commendation for the police operation. During a visit by journalists to the Total axis of Ihiala, locals shared their relief and urged authorities to intensify efforts against such criminals.
Chigozie Iwuchi, a resident, described the arrest as a major achievement, noting that the gang had operated undetected for years. He praised the Rapid Response Squad from Awkuzu for their diligent work and called for sustained surveillance to dislodge similar criminal elements from the state.
John Onwe, a commercial motorcycle operator, recounted his own harrowing experience with a similar gang, where he was assaulted and robbed of his earnings. He expressed joy over the arrests, describing the gang as terrors to Okada riders in the area and urging the police to focus more on Ihiala due to ongoing security challenges.
Another rider, Izundu Chimezie, highlighted the loss of motorcycles among his peers, including a friend named Asoanya, due to such criminal activities. He echoed calls for intensified police efforts to apprehend more perpetrators.
Police Commitment and Future Actions
The Anambra State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the protection of lives and property across the state. The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations. The command emphasized its dedication to sustaining security operations to curb crime and enhance public safety.
Local trader Mrs. Ntomchukwu suggested that police collaborate with vigilante groups familiar with the terrain to improve surveillance effectiveness, noting that relying solely on police efforts might be burdensome and less efficient in combating crime.
Background on Related Incidents
This arrest comes amid broader security concerns in Anambra. In a separate development, the Nando community recently denied police allegations linking its indigenes to the killing of three Cameroonian nationals, with community leaders rejecting the claims as false and damaging to their reputation.
The successful operation in Ihiala underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address criminal activities in the region, with residents hopeful for continued progress in enhancing security and reducing crime rates.
