Police bust gun-making factory in Yobe
The Yobe State Police Command has uncovered an illegal firearms fabrication factory in Potiskum, leading to the arrest of seven suspects. The command's spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the command's renewed strategy to combat crime and criminality across the state.
According to him, operatives of the Potiskum Area Command, in collaboration with the Divisional Police Headquarters, carried out a coordinated raid on June 2, 2026, following credible intelligence. "Acting on credible intelligence, the Potiskum Area Command led a coordinated raid in collaboration with the Divisional Police Headquarters following reports that some blacksmiths were engaged in the illegal fabrication of Dane guns and other firearms," he said.
Abdulkarim explained that the operatives stormed a blacksmith workshop located at Tasha Adua along Danchuwa Road, Potiskum. He disclosed that seven suspects were arrested during the operation, while exhibits recovered included two fabricated pistols, 24 muzzle pipes, nine gun butts, four unserviceable Dane guns, one filing machine and a cutlass.
According to him, the suspects are undergoing investigation to identify their collaborators, possible buyers and the intended use of the fabricated firearms. The Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, directed officers handling the case to intensify investigations, identify other illegal firearm fabrication centres and assess the security threats posed by such activities.
Jibrin also advised residents not to allow their premises to be used for unlawful activities, including the fabrication of dangerous weapons.
Borno Police arrest eight over drug offences
Meanwhile, the Borno State Police Command has arrested eight suspects over alleged drug-related offences in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council of the state. The command said the arrests followed directives by the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, to intensify efforts against drug abuse, illicit trafficking and other social vices.
Spokesperson for the command, ASP Nahum Daso, disclosed that the Rapid Response Squad Anti-Social Vices Team carried out a targeted raid in the Bulumkutu and Dala areas of Maiduguri on June 1, 2026. He said the operation led to the arrest of eight suspects for alleged possession and consumption of prohibited substances.
Items recovered during the raid included 46 capsules of tramadol, 12 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and two D5 tablets. "The suspects have been charged to court, while the recovered exhibits have been tendered as evidence," Daso stated.
The command reiterated its commitment to tackling criminality and urged residents to continue supporting the police with credible information to combat drug-related offences and other crimes.
