Police Uncover Plot to Bomb Government Facilities in Ondo, Arrest Six Suspects
In a significant security breakthrough, the Ondo State Police Command has successfully foiled a planned bomb attack targeting government infrastructure across the state. The operation, based on credible intelligence, led to the arrest of six suspected terrorists who had infiltrated Akure, the state capital, with intentions to unleash a wave of destruction using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Intelligence-Led Operation Prevents Devastating Assault
Acting on actionable intelligence regarding a suspected criminal syndicate operating across state lines, police operatives were swiftly deployed to a location in Akure on Wednesday. The suspects, who had allegedly mapped out specific government installations as targets, were apprehended before they could execute what authorities described as a potentially devastating assault on public assets. This timely intervention averted what could have resulted in significant loss of lives and widespread property destruction.
Details of the Arrest and Recovered Items
Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal confirmed during a press briefing on Thursday that the suspects had rented an apartment in the Oke-Odu area of Akure to serve as their operational base. The arrested individuals are identified as Adekunle Prosper, 56; Ojo Olumide, 39; Tope Kolawole, 40; Ahmed Salihu, 40; Bolaji Adebowale, 46; and Gbadebo Abidemi, 43. A thorough search of the scene and subsequent operations resulted in the recovery of a cache of incriminating items, including:
- 217 bottles and a bag of sugar, suspected to be components for IED fabrication
- Criminal charms and 17 mobile phones
- The sum of ₦187,000 and two HP laptops
- Eight slings, one knife, and an external hard drive
- Two identity cards and one National Identity Number (NIN) card
- Two motorcycles, among other items
Preliminary assessments indicate that some of these materials were intended for constructing explosive devices, while others may have facilitated coordinated criminal activities. Early findings suggest the group was actively assembling IEDs for deployment on government infrastructures, with indications that their operations might extend beyond Akure to other parts of the country.
Police Urge Vigilance and Background Checks
The Ondo State Police Command strongly condemns this act and has urged house owners and property managers to conduct thorough background checks on prospective tenants. This measure aims to prevent premises from being used as criminal hideouts or operational bases. The command also calls for calm and increased vigilance among residents, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining security.
This operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in preventing terrorist activities and safeguarding public assets. The police continue their investigations to uncover any further links or plans associated with the arrested suspects.
