Rivers Police Intensify Hunt for Suspects in Gay Man's Fatal Assault

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed it is actively pursuing suspects involved in the tragic death of Hillary Emereole, a 23-year-old gay man who was allegedly thrown from a two-storey hotel balcony in Port Harcourt. Police spokesperson CSP Grace Iringe-Koko stated that while the perpetrators are currently on the run, the command is determined to apprehend them and ensure justice is served.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to official reports, Hillary Emereole traveled from Owerri, Imo State, to Port Harcourt on July 23, 2025, to meet an individual identified as David Ilo, also known as David Emeka, at the Oxygen Hotel in the Woji area. Shortly after entering a hotel room, David reportedly excused himself to purchase drinks but returned with a group of accomplices.

The assailants allegedly subjected Hillary to physical assault, extorted money from him, and contacted his mother to demand ransom while threatening to harm her son. In a desperate attempt to escape, Hillary made his way to the hotel room balcony and cried out for help. Tragically, the attackers pursued him and threw him from the balcony, resulting in severe injuries that required spinal surgery.

After months of hospitalization and medical treatment, Hillary succumbed to his injuries on October 23, 2025. The case was subsequently reported to the Mini Okoro Police Station, sparking significant public concern and demands for justice.

Police Investigation and Official Statements

In response to mounting public outcry, the Rivers State Police Command has launched a thorough investigation into the incident. CSP Grace Iringe-Koko emphasized that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) is leading the probe, with direct involvement from the State Commissioner of Police.

"The command is aware of the incident that occurred, the case of murder, and it is being investigated by SCID," Iringe-Koko stated. "We have put in place measures to ensure that the fleeing suspect is arrested and faces justice. We are also condoling with the family and loved ones, urging them to be patient because our hands are not tied. We will ensure that the perpetrators of that heinous crime are brought to book and justice will be served."

The police spokesperson confirmed that the hotel manager has been interviewed and provided a statement regarding the events. She reiterated the command's commitment to tracking down all individuals involved in the attack, assuring the public that no effort will be spared in the investigation.

Broader Implications and Community Response

This case has highlighted ongoing concerns about violence against LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria, where same-sex relationships are criminalized under federal law. The incident has drawn attention to the need for enhanced protection and justice for vulnerable communities, regardless of legal frameworks.

The Rivers State Police Command's proactive stance in this investigation signals a determination to address violent crimes comprehensively. As the manhunt continues, authorities urge anyone with information about the suspects or the incident to come forward to assist in the pursuit of justice for Hillary Emereole and his grieving family.
