The Safe School Initiative (SSI) Unit of the Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old student to death. The incident occurred on July 16 in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area (LGA), according to police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga.
Police activate SSI operations
In a statement issued on Friday in Awka, Ikenga said the command activated its SSI operations led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Harrison Oruruo. The team will commence a manhunt for the teacher, who allegedly flogged the victim resulting in his death.
Police operatives from Neni Division responded promptly after receiving the report on the evening of July 16. They rushed the victim to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment. The body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Visible marks of violence found
Ikenga stated that photographs of the deceased were taken, and preliminary observations revealed visible marks of violence on different parts of the victim's body. The case is under investigation, and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure anyone found culpable faces the law.
The police expressed deep concern over the tragic incident and assured the family and the public of a thorough, diligent, and transparent investigation. The command reiterated its commitment to protecting school children through the SSI.
