Police Neutralize Suspected Kidnapper, Disrupt Gang in Nasarawa State
The Nasarawa State Police Command has achieved a significant operational success by neutralizing one suspected kidnapper and disrupting his criminal gang. This action comes as part of relentless efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of lives and property for all residents and travelers.
Early Morning Operation on Akwanga Highway
According to SP Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Monday. A police patrol team, while conducting routine patrols along the Akwanga Highway, discovered an attempted kidnapping incident near Rice Mill in Nasarawa Eggon.
The team observed that the highway had been barricaded with stones by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, with the clear intention of attacking unsuspecting motorists. Upon sighting the police patrol team, the hoodlums immediately opened fire, prompting a swift and decisive response from the operatives.
Exchange of Gunfire and Suspect Neutralization
In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the criminals were overpowered by the police. One of the suspects was neutralized during the confrontation, while others fled into the surrounding bush with possible gunshot wounds. The neutralized suspect was later identified as Auta Habu from a Ruga (Fulani settlement) in Gidan Waya village of the Local Government Area.
Following the development, Commissioner of Police Shetima Mohammed promptly mobilized a reinforcement team to the scene to ensure the area was secured and normalcy was restored. The suspect was rushed to a medical facility, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead.
Background and Ongoing Investigations
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased had been involved in several criminal activities in the area. The gang had been causing sleepless nights and unnecessary attacks on motorists along the Lafia-Nassarawa-Eggon and Akwanga Highway, creating a climate of fear and insecurity.
The highway has since been cleared and is now safe for motorists and other road users. Efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing members of the gang, with police urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station for necessary action.
