Police Officer Kills Man in Oyo Days After Executing Restrained Suspect in Delta

On May 2, 2026, protests erupted in parts of Oyo State after men of the Nigerian Police Force reportedly shot a man dead during a stop-and-search operation. Human rights activist Rinu Oduala shared that the victim, identified as Yehuza Umar, was killed by police operatives. She alleged that the officers were carrying out an illegal stop-and-search exercise and attempting to extort money from the victim before shooting him.

Oduala wrote on social media: “Nigeria police officer shoots another Nigerian, Yehuza Umar, dead in Oyo State, days after Mene Ogidi was executed in Delta.” She further claimed that the officers involved were on illegal stop-and-search duty and were trying to extort bribes from the Fulani man when he was shot dead.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the allegation.

This development comes days after a separate incident in Delta State, where a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, was killed by a police officer in Effurun, sparking widespread outrage. A viral video showed Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman shooting the restrained suspect at close range. In the video, Ogidi is seen sitting on the ground with his hands tied behind his back, pleading with officers in Pidgin English not to shoot him. He explained that a friend in Sapele had sent a package containing a locally made pistol without his knowledge and offered to take the officers to the friend. Despite his pleas, one of the officers cocked his rifle and fired directly at him, causing him to fall to the ground as bystanders watched.

The Nigeria Police Force arrested ASP Nuhu Usman after the video went viral. The Delta State Police Command confirmed that the officer involved has been dismissed from the force along with others linked to the case. The Inspector-General of Police described the act as “criminal and unprofessional,” adding that the dismissed officers will face prosecution. He stated that the Force Disciplinary Committee quickly took up the case, and three inspectors faced an Orderly Room Tribunal.
