The Bauchi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of a 33-year-old man, Aminu Najamu, in the Gwallaga area of Bauchi Local Government Area. Najamu was discovered dead in his room on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, causing alarm and confusion among residents.
Discovery of the Body
According to community members, the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood, with indications that he may have been attacked while asleep during the night.
Police Confirmation and Investigation
The command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, June 13, 2026, noting that preliminary investigations have commenced. Habib stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet and thorough probe.
“The Bauchi State Police Command is investigating a suspected case of murder involving one Aminu Najamu, 33-year-old, male, of Kobi Street, Gwallaga, Bauchi LGA,” the statement read. “According to reports, the deceased entered his room on 7th June 2026 and was found dead on 9th June 2026.”
Upon receiving the report, operatives from ‘A’ Division, Township, initiated a preliminary investigation. The case was subsequently moved to the SCID for in-depth inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and to identify and apprehend those involved.
Commissioner’s Assurance
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has assured the public that the command will leave no stone unturned until justice is served. He urged anyone with useful information to report promptly to the nearest police station or the investigating team. The CP reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and warned that perpetrators of violent crimes will be pursued and face the full force of the law. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Rights Group Criticism
Meanwhile, the Organisation for African Child Development and Human Rights Protection, led by Barr. Alkasim Muhammad, has criticized the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for alleged inaction following the murder. The group claimed that as of June 10, 2026, the DPO had not invited or arrested any suspect in connection with the killing.
The organization also questioned the handling of the case at the divisional level. “Why did the DPO so quickly release the deceased’s body for burial within three hours without proper investigation? Why was the case not transferred to the State CID for further investigation, given the nature of the crime? Why has the police failed to revisit the crime scene for evidence gathering?” the group queried.
The group called on the Commissioner of Police to set up a special investigative team to thoroughly examine the case. It also demanded the exhumation of the victim’s body for autopsy, the immediate arrest of suspects for interrogation, and the replacement of the DPO within 24 hours, citing possible compromise in the investigation. Furthermore, it urged the constitution of a panel to review the officer’s handling of the case.
