Police Initiate Murder Investigation Following Discovery of Teenager's Body at University of Ibadan Swimming Pool
The Oyo State Police Command has officially launched a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of an unidentified teenage boy, whose body was discovered at the swimming pool of the University of Ibadan (UI). Authorities are treating this case as a suspected murder, heightening concerns within the academic community and across social media platforms.
Details of the Incident and Initial Findings
According to DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the Public Relations Officer for the Oyo State Police Command, the incident came to light on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The body of the victim, estimated to be between 14 and 15 years old, was found floating on the surface of the swimming pool. The police were alerted by the institution's Chief Security Officer, who reported the discovery promptly.
Upon arrival at the scene, detectives conducted preliminary investigations and noted that the body had already been removed from the pool and placed nearby. Disturbing signs were observed on the corpse, including blood oozing from the mouth and nose, along with slight bruises on the nose. These indicators have led investigators to suspect foul play in the teenager's death.
Evidence Collected and Ongoing Probe
In addition to the physical evidence on the body, police recovered items believed to belong to the deceased, such as a pair of shoes and a shirt, found close to the pool. Furthermore, blood stains were discovered within the pavilion area adjacent to the swimming facility, strengthening suspicions that the teenager may have been attacked prior to being found in the pool.
The victim was immediately transported to General Hospital, Adeoyo, in Ibadan, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited at the hospital's mortuary to await identification and an autopsy, which will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death.
Police Assurance and Public Appeal
The Oyo State Police Command has assured the public that no effort will be spared in uncovering the truth behind this incident. DSP Ayanlade emphasized that the case is being treated as a suspected murder, and a thorough investigation is underway to unravel all circumstances surrounding the death. The Command has also urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information while the investigation continues.
This development has sparked significant concern and discussion, particularly on social media, where reports of the incident have gone viral. The university community is closely monitoring the situation as authorities work diligently to bring clarity and justice to this tragic event.
