The Katsina State Police Command has announced the foiling of a kidnapping attempt and the rescue of 11 victims following a fierce gun battle with suspected bandits. The operation also led to the recovery of 25 cows rustled in a separate incident.
Details of the Rescue Operation
According to a statement released by the command's spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, the first incident occurred on May 18, 2026, at approximately 4:45 pm along the Sheme-Kankara road in Kankara Local Government Area. Heavily armed bandits blocked the road at Kakumi Village and intercepted an unregistered Toyota Hiace bus carrying 11 passengers en route to Kano, abducting all occupants.
Upon receiving a distress call at 8:45 pm, the Divisional Police Officer of Kankara Division swiftly mobilized operatives to the scene. The police engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel. Overpowered by superior firepower, the assailants abandoned the victims and fled. All 11 kidnapped passengers were rescued unhurt. Intensive bush combing is ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Cattle Rustling Incident Foiled
In a related development on the same day, the command received a distress call at about 8:50 pm reporting that suspected armed bandits had attacked Badawa Village in Malumfashi LGA, rustling 25 cows. The DPO of Malumfashi quickly deployed APC patrol teams to intercept the bandits along a suspected escape route on the village outskirts.
After another exchange of gunfire, the bandits abandoned the cattle and escaped. All 25 cows were recovered and returned to their rightful owners. The police have reinforced security in the area with ongoing patrols and surveillance to ensure the possible arrest of the fleeing suspects.
