The Yobe State Police Command has successfully rescued an abandoned newborn baby girl discovered in Kallalawa village, located in Damaturu, the state capital.

Police Spokesperson Confirms Rescue

The command's spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Dungus Abdulkarim, made this known in an official statement released on Monday, May 25, 2026. According to Abdulkarim, the infant, estimated to be just one day old, was found abandoned in the village.

Immediate Medical Attention

Upon rescue, the newborn was rushed to a medical facility where doctors conducted a thorough examination and confirmed that she was in stable condition. The prompt action ensured the baby received necessary care without delay.

Details of the Incident

“On 25th May 2026, at about 1500 hours, operatives attached to A Division, Damaturu, rescued a newborn baby girl estimated to be one day old after she was discovered abandoned at Kallalawa Village,” the statement read in part.

“The infant was promptly taken to the Special Baby Care Unit, General Hospital Damaturu, where medical examination confirmed her to be in stable condition.”

Handover to Social Welfare

Following the medical clearance, the child was transferred to the Social Welfare Department, which will ensure her proper care and protection. Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched to trace the mother and understand the circumstances that led to the abandonment.

The police urge anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
