A 23-year-old pregnant woman, identified as G Sushmita, died by suicide in Hyderabad after her husband allegedly subjected her to humiliation by demanding a DNA test for her unborn child. The incident led to the arrest of the husband, G Abhilash, and his mother, Laxmi, on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
Details of the Incident
Sushmita was found hanging at her residence in Gadipeddapur village of Alladurg mandal in Medak district on the evening of June 25. She was five months pregnant at the time of her death. According to police, the couple had been married for about 18 months. Abhilash worked as a bangle seller, while Sushmita was a native of Mothkupally village in Vikarabad district.
Police Action and Arrests
Alladurg sub-inspector D Shankar confirmed the arrests, stating, “We arrested her husband G Abhilash and his mother Laxmi. They were produced before the magistrate and sent to judicial remand.” The police registered a case on June 26 under sections 85 (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 108 (abetment of suicide), read with section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Allegations of Harassment
In a complaint lodged with police, Sushmita’s mother, G Janabai, alleged that her daughter had been subjected to sustained physical and mental harassment by her husband, with the demand for a DNA test intensifying the distress. Janabai stated in her complaint: “On June 23, my husband and I visited Sushmita’s house to discuss arrangements for the baby shower ceremony. While we were there, Abhilash had an argument about the ceremony and demanded a DNA test for the unborn child. Subsequently, elders from the community intervened and we returned home.”
The demand was made in the presence of both families, causing severe humiliation and emotional trauma to Sushmita. Family members alleged that the suspicion cast on her character deeply affected her mental state. Two days later, on June 25 evening, Sushmita died by suicide at her house. Villagers informed her parents of the incident.
Impact and Legal Proceedings
Janabai further alleged that continuous harassment by her husband and mother-in-law drove her daughter to take the extreme step. Following a post-mortem, the body was handed over to Sushmita’s parents. The case highlights the severe consequences of domestic cruelty and the trauma caused by baseless accusations. The accused remain in judicial custody as investigations continue.
