First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has distributed a ₦100 million economic grant to 2,000 women petty traders in Benue State as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). Each beneficiary received ₦50,000 to support their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
ICT Centre Commissioned
During her visit, Mrs Tinubu also commissioned the Lucy Zayol Aluor Community ICT Centre in Vandeikya Local Government Area. The facility, built in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), aims to advance digital literacy and technology skills among youths and women in the area.
Speaking at the event, the First Lady emphasized that empowering women is critical to national development. She noted that the grant and ICT centre would help beneficiaries expand their businesses and participate more effectively in the modern economy.
Infrastructure Development
In addition to the empowerment programme, Mrs Tinubu participated in the official commissioning of 10 newly constructed intra-city roads in Makurdi, the state capital. The roads, spanning approximately 11.5 kilometres, include the Shire Bakut Road dual carriageway and Abu Ken Shulua Road, executed under Phase I of the Urban Renewal Programme by the Benue State Government.
One of the roads, Ishayaba Street, was renamed after the First Lady in recognition of her contributions. She stated, "These roads are pathways to economic growth. They will improve mobility, enhance security, and ensure a better quality of life for the people of Makurdi and beyond."
Governor's Appreciation
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia, thanked the First Lady for selecting the state as a beneficiary of the Renewed Hope Initiative. He said the grant and ICT centre would positively impact residents, particularly women and young people seeking economic opportunities.
The Renewed Hope Initiative, chaired by the First Lady, has implemented similar empowerment programmes across several states, providing grants, educational support, vocational training and other interventions targeted at women, youths and vulnerable groups. The Benue programme is part of a nationwide campaign to reduce poverty and expand access to economic opportunities.
