The rising cost of authentic palm oil has driven many Nigerians to seek cheaper alternatives, leading to a surge in adulterated palm oil in markets, particularly in Lagos State. This trend has prompted an investigation by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), which warns that the contaminated product poses serious health risks.
Health Risks of Adulterated Palm Oil
LASCOPA General Manager Afolabi Solebo revealed that complaints and market surveillance have uncovered the sale of artificially enhanced palm oil containing harmful substances such as candle wax, chemicals, dyes, and impurities. These additives cannot be digested and may cause food poisoning, stomach disorders, tissue and liver damage, and long-term health issues, including cancer.
Market Surveillance and Enforcement
Lagos Island has been identified as a hotspot for this illicit trade. LASCOPA confirmed the closure of a shop on Idutafa Lane, off Oluwa Street near Amodu Tijani Oluwa Mosque. The agency warned traders to cease such practices or face legal sanctions under Lagos State consumer protection laws.
Adulterated palm oil often appears more attractive due to its rich color, but cooking reveals floating dyes and unpleasant odors. Some variants cause stew to turn blood-red and emit nauseating smells, making them difficult for unsuspecting buyers to detect.
Previous Arrests and Laboratory Findings
In earlier incidents, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested palm oil suppliers in Potiskum, Yobe State, and Jos, Plateau State, for adulteration with dye. Laboratory tests by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) confirmed high acid levels, saponification, and relative density, along with cancer-causing dye residues.
Consumer Advisory
LASCOPA advises consumers to examine palm oil carefully before purchase, checking for unusual color, offensive odor, excessive thickness, sediments, or suspicious appearance. The agency urges the public to report suspected adulterated products or deceptive practices through official channels for investigation and enforcement.
LASCOPA reaffirmed its commitment to continuous market monitoring, consumer sensitization, and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure access to safe, wholesome products in Lagos State.
