Rivers Police Command Investigates Alleged Sexual Abuse of Two Minors in Port Harcourt
The Rivers State Police Command has officially commenced a thorough investigation into disturbing allegations of sexual abuse involving two young minors. The case centers on a 45-year-old man identified as Paschal, who is accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl in the Port Harcourt area.
Details of the Allegations and Police Response
According to reports, the investigation is being handled by the Nkpolu Police Division located at Mile 3 Diobu in Port Harcourt. The probe was initiated following formal complaints lodged by the parents of the alleged victims. Mrs. Ada, mother of the 10-year-old boy, and Mr. Alex, father of the 11-year-old girl, both residents of the area, reported the incident to authorities.
The suspect is said to be a resident of the Pipeline axis in Egbelu, within the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Disturbingly, sources indicate that Paschal was reportedly known to the families of the alleged victims prior to the incident.
Human Rights Advocate Involvement and Community Concerns
Mr. Prince Wiro, a prominent human rights advocate who serves as the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, confirmed that the case was brought to his attention by the parents of the minors. He stated that he personally accompanied them to the Nkpolu Police Division where the matter was formally documented.
"The necessary procedures have been initiated, including medical referrals for the children," Mr. Wiro explained. He commended the Divisional Police Officer of the Nkpolu Police Division for what he described as a thorough and professional approach to handling the sensitive case.
However, Mr. Wiro expressed serious concern about alleged attempts by some individuals in the Egbelu community to resolve the matter privately rather than allowing the legal process to proceed. "There have been disturbing attempts to settle this case outside of proper legal channels," he stated, emphasizing the critical need for justice and due process to be followed.
Official Response and Family Statements
When contacted for comment, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, indicated that she would provide an official response regarding the investigation. However, as of the latest updates, no formal statement had been released by the command.
In a significant development, the father of the 11-year-old girl has publicly denied any form of settlement with the suspect. Mr. Alex insisted that the matter must be fully investigated by the police to ensure that justice is properly served for both children.
The case has drawn attention to the broader issues of child protection and sexual abuse in Nigerian communities, with advocates calling for strengthened mechanisms to prevent such incidents and ensure appropriate legal responses when they occur.
