Russian National Convicted in London Court for Assault on Girlfriend
A Russian man has been found guilty in a London court of assaulting a woman, in a case that gained international attention after it was reported to UK police by Barron Trump, the youngest son of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The incident occurred in London, with the suspect identified as Russian, and the witness who observed the attack via a video call was located in the United States, coincidentally being Barron Trump.
Details of the Assault and Court Proceedings
On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, 22-year-old Matvei Rumiantsev was convicted of assault after admitting in court to feelings of jealousy over his girlfriend's friendship with Barron Trump, who is 19 years old. During cross-examination on January 23, prosecutors questioned Rumiantsev about his jealousy towards the ex-girlfriend's relationship with Barron.
According to reports from Metro, Rumiantsev stated, "What I was really unhappy about was that she was frankly leading [Barron] on." He added, "I am being portrayed as a jealous person who can lose his temper due to jealousy. I want to just make clear that her actions towards [Barron] were wrong, and it was not fair. I was jealous to some extent."
The assault involved Rumiantsev allegedly grabbing the woman's hair, pushing her to the floor, and shouting, "You are not worth anything." The jury delivered a guilty verdict for assault, as reported by BBC and CNN on Wednesday.
Additional Charges and Acquittals
Rumiantsev was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice after he wrote to the woman from prison following the attack on January 18, 2025, urging her to withdraw her accusations. However, he was acquitted at Snaresbrook Crown Court of charges including r@pe and choking the woman on the night Trump contacted police, as well as an additional r@pe and assault alleged in November 2024.
Barron Trump, the only child of Donald and Melania Trump, did not testify in the case, despite his role in reporting the incident to authorities. This high-profile involvement has drawn significant media coverage, highlighting the intersection of international figures and domestic violence cases.
