A 68-year-old man who frequently portrayed Santa Claus at community events in Florida has been arrested on charges related to child sexual abuse. Thomas Allen Hicks was taken into custody following an undercover police operation in Polk County.
Undercover Sting Operation
According to authorities, detectives from the Polk County Sheriff's Office posed online as a parent offering a teenage girl for paid sex. Hicks allegedly responded to the advertisement and continued communicating even after being informed that the girl was 13 years old. Over a series of messages, the suspect discussed arrangements and reportedly agreed to pay $200 for the encounter.
Arrest and Charges
Police stated that Hicks traveled to a predetermined meeting location in Lakeland, where deputies arrested him. At the time of arrest, authorities reported that he had cash in his possession. During questioning, Hicks admitted to seeing the advertisement and being aware of the girl's age. He now faces multiple charges, including human trafficking, attempting to engage in sex with a minor, and using electronic communication to solicit illegal activity.
Community Reaction
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd expressed shock at the arrest, highlighting Hicks's public profile. “This is a guy who is well known in Polk County, Central Florida and Lakeland as a for-hire Santa Claus,” Judd said. “It’s scary, as this guy was well respected in the community.” The sheriff described the case as particularly disturbing given the suspect's role as a beloved figure in local events.
Broader Investigation
Authorities indicated that the arrest was part of a larger operation targeting online exploitation, which resulted in multiple suspects being taken into custody over several days. The case underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat crimes against minors in digital spaces.
