Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Issues Warning Over Fraudulent Viral Video
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has issued a stern public warning regarding a viral video circulating on social media that falsely depicts her endorsing a fraudulent investment platform. In an official statement released on Sunday through her verified social media accounts, the lawmaker denounced the clip as a manipulated fabrication created by scammers to deceive unsuspecting Nigerians and extract their money.
Details of the Manipulated Video
Akpoti-Uduaghan clarified that the video in question was altered from a previous interview she conducted with television journalist Seun Okinbaloye. According to her, fraudsters edited the original footage, repurposing it to promote a fake investment opportunity that promises unrealistic financial returns. She emphasized that while the video may appear to feature her voice and likeness, it is entirely fabricated and should not be trusted as authentic.
The senator stated, "This video is a complete forgery designed to exploit my identity for criminal gains. I urge all Nigerians to disregard it entirely and avoid any financial transactions linked to this scheme."
Rising Sophistication of Online Scams
Akpoti-Uduaghan highlighted that this incident underscores the increasing sophistication of online scams, where criminals leverage the credibility of public figures to lure victims. She noted that such tactics are part of a broader surge in digital fraud cases, with scammers increasingly using advanced tools like video manipulation and artificial intelligence to imitate well-known personalities and promote deceptive schemes.
In response, she called for heightened vigilance among citizens, advising them to:
- Carefully verify any investment opportunity before committing resources.
- Report social media pages or platforms hosting the misleading video to curb its spread.
- Remain cautious of offers that seem too good to be true, especially those endorsed by public figures without official verification.
Appeal to Authorities and Social Media Companies
The Kogi Central lawmaker further appealed to relevant authorities and social media companies to take swift action against those responsible for creating and distributing the fraudulent content. She emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to combat such scams and protect the public from financial harm.
"We must work together to hold these fraudsters accountable and prevent others from falling victim," Akpoti-Uduaghan added, stressing the importance of regulatory and technological measures to address the growing threat of online identity theft and fraud.
This warning comes amid a notable increase in similar digital fraud incidents across Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness and proactive measures to safeguard against such exploitative schemes.
