Victim Loses Eye in Brutal Stabbing Attack
Stephen Ogilvie, 44, lost his left eye after being repeatedly stabbed in a horrific attack that nearly resulted in his beheading. The incident, which occurred late Monday night in Northern Ireland, involved Sudanese migrant Hadi Alodid, 30, who allegedly attempted to decapitate Ogilvie.
According to a report by the Sun, Ogilvie sustained severe injuries to both eyes. Disturbing video footage captured the assailant pinning Ogilvie down, with a witness heard screaming, "He's trying to cut his head off. He's slicing his head off."
A court hearing in Belfast revealed that Ogilvie suffered serious wounds to his right eye, along with deep slash marks on his head, face, and back. Alodid appeared in court on Wednesday charged with attempted murder and possession of a blade.
Alodid was arrested shortly after the assault and allegedly told emergency services, "I have killed someone. I don't know if they are dead." The migrant, who reportedly entered the UK through a legal loophole, is also accused of threatening to kill a radiographer earlier that same day, stating, "I will kill you."
During the hearing, Alodid remained silent and appeared via video link. He was denied bail and is scheduled to reappear in court on July 8. Police strongly opposed bail, with a detective warning that potential future offenses could be "serious and unpredictable in nature."
Judge Stephen Keown stated that the risks of granting bail were "far too great" due to the likelihood of reoffending and the danger to the public. He also noted that Alodid might attempt to flee the country. The migrant entered the UK through the Common Travel Area, an open-border zone allowing free movement between British and Irish citizens.
Riots Erupt Following Attack
The stabbing triggered anti-immigration protests that escalated into riots across Northern Ireland on Tuesday night. Angry mobs hurled petrol bombs at police and set homes and vehicles on fire. Northern Ireland's First Minister, Michelle O'Neill, condemned the violence, calling the actions of "masked men burning families out of their homes" nothing less than disgusting cowardice and outright thuggery.
Two police officers were injured during the disorder. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher described the protests as an "act of self-harm" and an insult to the victim. He urged protesters to take control of their actions, stating, "What we saw last night was an insult to the victim of the terrible attack that many of you will have watched online."
