Ondo Court Remands Student for Alleged Assault on 13-Year-Old Schoolmate
An Akure Magistrate's Court has ordered the remand of a 17-year-old student, Ilesanmi Emmanuel, in a juvenile correctional facility for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old female schoolmate, Olamide Kadiri, with a metal belt, resulting in a severe eye injury. The incident occurred on February 19, 2026, at approximately 7:41 a.m. at Mooreb Idea Primary and College in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
Charges and Allegations
Emmanuel was arraigned alongside the school proprietor, Mathew Ologunleko, aged 70; a staff member, Ade Agunbiade, 40; and a class teacher, Anifowose Rebecca, 38. The three adults face charges of negligence, with the police prosecutor, Martins Olowofeso, stating that the school authorities failed to properly supervise students, which allegedly led to the assault. According to the charge, Emmanuel hit the victim during a school event, causing serious injury to her right eye.
The charge further alleges that the proprietor and staff members neglected their duty of care to ensure student safety. The offence is contrary to and punishable under Sections 515 and 335 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2021.
Court Proceedings and Ruling
During the hearing, counsel to the defendants, Israel Tiwo, urged the court to grant bail to the second, third, and fourth defendants. In her ruling, Magistrate Temitope Alphonso admitted Ologunleko, Agunbiade, and Rebecca to bail in the sum of N500,000 each, with one surety in like sum. However, the court ordered that Emmanuel be remanded in a juvenile correctional facility pending further hearing.
The magistrate also directed that a weekly medical report on the victim's health condition be submitted to the court. The case has been adjourned until March 31, 2026, for further proceedings.
