Suspect arrested for killing Edo returnee with machete

The Edo State Police Command has made an arrest in connection with the brutal killing of a man who had returned to his community for the festive season. The suspect, identified as Amadin William, is accused of using a machete to fatally attack 43-year-old Eghosa Osaikhuowuomwan, popularly known as Didi.

Details of the Fatal Attack

The incident occurred in the Oben community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State. According to the police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, the victim was attending a housewarming party on 22 December 2025. Osaikhuowuomwan, who reportedly resided abroad and was visiting for Christmas and New Year, excused himself from the gathering to defecate.

It was at this moment that the suspect allegedly trailed him, armed with a machete. William is accused of attacking the victim, inflicting a severe cut on his neck. Eghosa Osaikhuowuomwan bled profusely from the wound and was later confirmed dead at a hospital.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The matter was reported to the police the following day, 23 December 2025, by the deceased's younger sister, Endurance Efe. Following the report, police investigators began tracking the primary suspect.

Amadin William was eventually apprehended in Benin City on 27 December 2025. The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody, though she could not independently verify the claim that the deceased was a returnee from abroad.

Arson and Additional Arrests

The violent killing triggered a retaliatory act in the community. In the aftermath of the murder, hoodlums suspected to be from the victim's family set fire to the house belonging to the suspect's father. A community banner was also burnt.

This act of arson led to the arrest of two more individuals. Prince Nosa, 25, and Sunday Ogedegbe, 30, are now in police custody for their alleged involvement in the burning of the property. The police have stressed that investigations into both the murder and the arson case are ongoing.
