A 22-year-old suspected burglar was beaten to death by an irate mob in Oke-Sokori, Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The victim, identified as Lekan, allegedly broke into the sales lot of Ademolake Auto Sales to steal motor parts.
Mob Justice Strikes in Abeokuta
The incident occurred during the weekly environmental sanitation period, between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. According to Quadri Bankole, the security guard attached to the auto sales lot, the burglar gained entry through a small gate that had been left open for potential customers. Bankole recounted that he was asleep when an apprentice of a vulcanizer, whose shop is located in front of the sales lot, alerted him to the intrusion.
“Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., I was in the office, but I opened our small gate in case customers may come to inquire about the price of our vehicle because we are observing the Thursday environmental sanitation period. All of a sudden, I heard an apprentice of a vulcanizer in front of our garage shout thief,” Bankole narrated.
He immediately went out and discovered the suspect at the back of the office, packing abandoned motor parts into a large sack. “When I caught him and I asked him what are you looking for, he said he was looking for used water bottles. We have lost so many things in our office, like cooking gas 6kg, motor battery. He even came to the other side of this road and was caught removing their generator and was taken to OPC but was later released,” Bankole added.
Prior Theft and Community Anger
The suspect had reportedly been involved in previous thefts in the area. Two weeks before the fatal incident, he was alleged to have stolen a generator belonging to a local tailor. The mob that lynched him was fueled by frustration over repeated burglaries and perceived leniency by law enforcement.
A vulcanizer named Sogo Olorunfemi, whose shop is adjacent to the auto sales lot, confirmed the events. “We don’t know him; he just broke into the building at about 9 a.m. and was opening the already parked vehicles and also gained entrance into the office of the dealers to steal,” Olorunfemi said. The mob, having caught the suspect in the act, beat him severely, leading to his death before any security agency could intervene.
Security Guard Details the Incident
Bankole explained that the suspect had brought a sack with him, indicating a premeditated plan to steal multiple items. The guard expressed shock at the brazenness of the theft, especially during sanitation hours when many residents are engaged in cleaning their surroundings. “I was shocked to see the burglar arrive carrying a large sack, apparently intending to pack the abandoned motor parts stored behind the dealer’s office,” he said.
The mob, comprised of local residents and tradesmen, acted swiftly, and the suspect sustained multiple injuries from the beating. Despite attempts by some to alert the police, the mob's fury overwhelmed the situation. No official comment from the Ogun State Police Command was available at the time of reporting.
Community Reaction and Calls for Justice
The lynching has sparked mixed reactions in Oke-Sokori. Some residents expressed relief that a notorious thief had been dealt with, while others condemned the extrajudicial killing. Human rights activists have called for an end to mob justice, urging citizens to report crimes to the proper authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
This incident highlights the growing frustration with property crimes in the area, where residents feel that the police are either ineffective or too slow to respond. The Ogun State Government has not issued a statement regarding the lynching.
