Suspected Cultist Arrested Over Shooting of MAPOLY Student in Ogun State
Security operatives in Ogun State have made a significant arrest in connection with the violent shooting of a student from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta. The suspect, identified as Fredrick, was taken into custody on April 1, 2026, following a collaborative investigation involving security agencies and the Peace Initiative Committee in Ogun Central.
Details of the Attack and Arrest
The incident occurred on March 27, 2026, when the victim, an ND1 student, was returning from school on a motorcycle. According to eyewitness accounts, armed cultists shot him in the stomach at close range, leaving him in a pool of blood. The assailants reportedly mistook him for another target, highlighting the random and dangerous nature of cult-related violence.
Fredrick, the arrested suspect, is alleged to be the owner of the motorcycle used in the attack. He has been held by the SWAT police unit as part of ongoing efforts to curb cult activities in the region. This arrest underscores the proactive measures being taken by law enforcement to address security threats in student-populated areas.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
Despite the severity of the attack, the student was rescued by a Good Samaritan and members of the student union. They initially took him to a nearby hospital, where he was allegedly rejected, before transporting him to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta. There, he underwent emergency surgery and is currently recuperating.
The victim's mother, Kemisola Aderogba, has spoken out, demanding justice for her son. "I want justice for my son. Those responsible must be found and made to face the law," she stated, echoing the concerns of many parents and community members affected by such incidents.
Community Response and Security Concerns
This shooting has ignited renewed calls for improved security and decisive action against cultism in Ogun State. Residents and students are urging authorities to implement stronger measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly in areas with high student concentrations. The lack of an official statement from authorities at the time of reporting has further fueled public anxiety and demands for transparency.
As investigations continue, this case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by cult-related violence and the critical need for enhanced law enforcement and community vigilance to ensure safety in educational environments.
