UK Teen Arrested as Historic Big Mill Engulfed in Major Arson Fire

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a major fire destroyed the historic Big Mill in Leek, Staffordshire, a Grade II-listed building that dates back to 1857. Police confirmed that the teenager, who is from the local area, is in custody on suspicion of arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.

Inferno Breaks Out at Historic Landmark

The blaze broke out at approximately 9:22 PM at the six-storey building located on Mill Street, prompting emergency evacuations as flames spread rapidly through the structure. According to Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, crews remained at the scene into Saturday as they worked diligently to bring the fire under control.

Station Manager Jonathan Ashby provided an update, stating: “The fire is under control but has yet to be extinguished as crews are unable to enter the building at this time. Multiple emergency crews and an aerial ladder platform were deployed to combat the blaze. Roads around the area, including the A523 Mill Street, were closed as authorities urged the public to avoid the scene for safety reasons.

Historical Significance of the Big Mill

The Big Mill, constructed in 1857, was a historic landmark that once housed a major silk manufacturing firm, employing thousands of workers during its operational years.
