The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 17-year-old boy, Amir, for the alleged murder of his 35-year-old neighbour, Rifkatu Haruna, in a brutal attack in Maiduguri. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the Layin Shagon Harun area of Shuwarin II, occurred late on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
Details of the Late-Night Attack
According to accounts from local residents, the suspect allegedly scaled the fence into the victim's compound after the family had gone to bed. A source, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that the teenager hid inside the house, waiting for an opportunity to strike.
"He used a knife and stabbed her in the chest and neck," the source stated. It was later discovered that the assailant escaped with the woman's mobile phone and a power bank. Many believe the fatal attack was intended to cover up the robbery.
Community Shock and Police Investigation
Residents expressed deep fear and horror, with some speculating that the suspect might be involved in other violent acts. "People are saying that the boy is a serial killer. He went in with a knife and targeted her chest and jugular vein," the anonymous resident added.
The breakthrough in the case came from the victim's sister-in-law. She reported to the police that she heard her sister-in-law's screams for help. Upon rushing to the scene, she reportedly saw the attacker fleeing back to his own house.
"She alerted neighbours when she saw him rushing back. He washed his hands and clothes quickly to avoid being caught red-handed," the source explained. This crucial identification led to the arrest of the suspect by operatives of the Police Crack Squad around 2:30 pm on Wednesday, December 3.
Official Confirmation and Ongoing Probe
The Police Public Relations Officer for Borno State Command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed the incident and the arrest. He stated that the suspect is currently in police custody, although detailed information about the case is still being gathered.
The community of Layin Shagon Harun remains in a state of mourning and anxiety following this tragic event. The case highlights ongoing concerns about violent crime and underscores the importance of community vigilance and swift police action.
