15-Year-Old Boy Confesses to Killing Aunt in Ilorin Over Repeated Scolding
A 15-year-old boy in Ilorin, Kwara State, has confessed to the murder of his aunt, Alhaja Aishat Gobir Akanbi, who had raised him since childhood, following repeated scolding for returning home late from school. The shocking revelation came after weeks of police investigation into the woman's gruesome death at her residence, with family members describing the loss as devastating.
Police Investigation and Confession
The Kwara State Police Command paraded the teenager, identified as Yusuf Gobir, during a briefing on recent crime-fighting operations. Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo stated that the boy was arrested after the discovery of the victim's body in a pool of blood inside her home. According to Ojo, the suspect allegedly hid behind a door and attacked the victim while she was bathing using household items. During interrogation, the boy confessed that he attacked her due to resentment over her frequent scolding.
Family sources revealed that the deceased had adopted Yusuf after the death of his biological mother and raised him as her own child. The incident occurred on January 14, when the victim was at home with her husband briefly out. Initially, the teenager told relatives he had gone out to buy fuel and returned to find the woman motionless in the bathroom. However, police investigations later uncovered his involvement.
Family and Community Reactions
Kola, a close associate of the late woman, described her as a humble and peaceful individual whose death shocked everyone. He recounted that the family initially believed the killing might have been the work of armed robbers, but weeks later, investigators found the teenager responsible. Kola added that the boy also confessed to secretly adding Sniper insecticide to the woman's food before the killing, as she often scolded him for coming home late.
Another family source, Saadalallah Abdullahi Abubakar, who served as a religious mentor to the victim's son, confirmed the tragedy. He noted that the family had recently moved to a new home in the Asa-Dam Ita Elepa area of Ilorin before the incident. Abdullahi expressed heartbreak over the revelation, stating that the aunt had taken the boy in after he lost his mother and raised him like her own child.
Ongoing Investigation and Related Incident
The teenager remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
