Teenager Receives Life Imprisonment for Brutal Mother Murder
An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the horrific murder of his own mother, a crime he subsequently boasted about on social media platforms. Tristan Roberts received his sentence at Mold Crown Court on Wednesday, March 25, following a disturbing case that shocked the community of Prestatyn in north Wales.
The Captivity and Attack
Roberts held his 45-year-old mother, Angela Shellis, captive inside their family home for more than four hours during the night of October 23, 2025. According to North Wales Police evidence presented in court, Roberts physically assaulted his mother while brandishing a hammer and refused to allow her to leave her bedroom during this terrifying ordeal.
CCTV footage captured the pair leaving their home address on foot shortly before 3:20 AM on October 24. They proceeded to Morfa Nature Park, where Roberts launched a brutal attack using a hammer, inflicting fatal injuries upon his mother. Surveillance cameras later showed Roberts walking home alone before returning to the nature area, where investigators believe he attempted to forensically clean the murder scene.
Discovery and Investigation
Angela Shellis's body was discovered by a member of the public in undergrowth at Morfa Nature Park. Police confirmed she had suffered significant head injuries from the attack. Within hours of the discovery, Tristan Roberts was identified and arrested, eventually being charged with his mother's murder.
Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Andrew Gibson stated: "Through a thorough investigation, the Major Incident Team, supported by specialist teams, were able to piece together the final hours of Angela's life, as well as evidence the extent that Tristan Roberts had gone to, over several weeks, as he planned to kill his mother."
Disturbing Online Behavior
During court proceedings, prosecutors revealed that Roberts had posted messages on the online platform Discord following the murder. In these messages, he wrote "I've just had the craziest day" before detailing how he had killed his mother. He described beating her and "smashed her skull in so hard with a sledge hammer."
Prosecutor Andrew Thomas KC told the court that Roberts had made a voice recording on the evening of October 23 in which he stated he was going to kill his mother that night with a sledgehammer. The recording, which was not played in court due to its distressing nature, captured more than two hours of conversation during which Ms. Shellis, a qualified teacher, pleaded with her son to let her go and call emergency services.
Family Tributes and Sentencing
In a heartfelt tribute, Angela's sister Sarah Gunther described her as "a woman whose heart, strength, and spirit shaped the lives of everyone who knew her." She added: "She was a fantastic and fiercely supportive mum, the kind who never gave up, no matter how hard life became. She fought tirelessly for them, and her love for them was unbreakable."
Angela's older son Ethan Roberts, who left the courtroom in tears during the hearing, said in a statement: "All my mum ever did was love Tristan."
Judge Rhys Rowlands, sentencing Roberts to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 and a half years, stated: "You appear to have revelled in the control you exerted over your own mother. It was on any view a truly awful way for someone to die. It was made all the more dreadful by the fact her attacker was her own son, someone who it is clear she both cared for and, indeed, worried about in the weeks leading up to her death."
Community Impact and Closure
Detective Superintendent Gibson acknowledged the local community's assistance throughout the investigation, stating: "I would like to thank the local community of Prestatyn for their assistance throughout the investigation, the information they submitted in response to our appeals, and for their patience and understanding as large areas of the Morfa were cordoned off for several days."
He concluded: "It was important that Angela remained the focal point throughout the investigation, and I hope today's sentencing allows for some closure and supports Angela's family in moving forward and towards rebuilding their lives."
Tristan Roberts had pleaded guilty to murder at Mold Crown Court last month, leading to today's life sentencing for this tragic family crime that has left a community in mourning and a family devastated by unimaginable loss.
