Thai Police Uncover N67 Million Hidden in Nigerian Suspect's Ceiling
In a dramatic late-night operation over the weekend, police in Thailand arrested a Nigerian national, Nwaiwu Ifeanyi, after discovering approximately 1.5 million baht, equivalent to over N67 million, concealed in the ceiling of his bathroom. The raid, which targeted a suspected drug distribution network, also led to the apprehension of three additional individuals believed to be connected to the same illicit activities.
Details of the Raid and Seizures
Authorities executed the operation following an extensive surveillance period, apprehending Ifeanyi near Silom Soi 1. During the arrest, officers allegedly found about 27 grams of cocaine in his possession. The raid resulted in the recovery of significant assets, including:
- Roughly 30 grams of cocaine in total
- Cash amounting to 1.5 million baht (over N67 million)
- Additional foreign currency valued at about 15,000 baht
- Jewelry estimated at 400,000 baht
- A vehicle linked to the suspects
Investigators disclosed that the other suspects taken into custody include a Swiss national, Thomas Giubibini, and two Thai nationals identified as Thanayot Asawamethi and Nattawat Wangkitjinda. All individuals are now facing charges related to drug possession and distribution.
Background and Investigation
According to details from Khaosod English, Ifeanyi had resided in Thailand for more than 17 years under a family visa obtained through a Thai spouse. However, officials now suspect that the marriage may have been arranged to facilitate his prolonged stay and operational activities within the country.
Police further alleged that the suspect coordinated drug transactions through encrypted messaging platforms, which law enforcement officers were able to infiltrate prior to making the arrests. During the apprehension, Ifeanyi reportedly resisted arrest but was ultimately subdued. Following his capture, he is said to have admitted involvement in the illicit activities.
Context and Ongoing Efforts
This arrest occurs amid ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to clamp down on drug trafficking networks operating within the region. It also follows a recent case involving another Nigerian national, Ukoma Nuzbech, who was earlier arrested for allegedly evading trial in a separate drug-related matter.
The successful operation highlights the intensified vigilance and investigative techniques employed by Thai police to combat international drug syndicates. Authorities continue to emphasize their commitment to disrupting such networks and bringing perpetrators to justice.
