Three Killed in Renewed Bayelsa Cult Clash, Residents Flee Amid Gunfire

Three persons were shot dead in a renewed cult clash at the Igbogene axis of Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, on Sunday, February 22, 2026. According to reports, two rival cult groups were engaged in a violent confrontation over control of the area, escalating tensions in the community.

Escalating Violence and Community Panic

The clash erupted in the early hours of Sunday, throwing the Igbogene community into panic as residents reported hearing gunshots in various parts of the area. This incident follows closely on the heels of a previous attack barely a week earlier, where a 30-year-old man, identified as Ebi, was beheaded by suspected members of a rival cult group at the Yenegue axis of Yenagoa. The recent violence has contributed to a disturbing trend, with at least six persons losing their lives in cult-related clashes over the past few weeks.

Residents of Igbogene described fleeing their homes for safety, while business activities were abruptly halted due to the unrest. Though the identities of the victims remain sketchy, it is reported that some youths sustained severe injuries during the confrontation. A resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, characterized the incident as "a continuation of the disturbing cult-related violence that has plagued parts of the state in recent weeks."

Community and Security Responses

In response to the crisis, community leaders are making efforts to appeal for calm and are urging youths to shun violence and embrace peace. Meanwhile, residents have called on the state government and security agencies to take proactive measures to prevent further bloodshed in the area.

Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, DSP Musa Muhammad, confirmed the latest cult clash and stated that an investigation has commenced. Efforts are underway to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, as authorities seek to restore order and address the ongoing security challenges.
