Ibobuminate Oweifa, the son of a traditional ruler in Bayelsa State, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly setting a man named Godgift Biko on fire. The incident occurred in the Okodi community of Ogbia Local Government Area, where Biko was accused of attempting to steal firewood.
Victim Hospitalized with Severe Burns
Godgift Biko sustained severe burns and is currently receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. Police Commissioner Iyamah Edebor confirmed that officers responded swiftly after the incident was reported.
According to Edebor, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) immediately rescued the victim, ensured he received first aid at a nearby clinic, and apprehended the suspect. The commissioner stated, “The DPO immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect. Preliminary investigation has commenced; upon conclusion, the suspect will be charged in court.”
Suspect Claims Victim Stole Firewood
During interrogation, Oweifa told investigators that he caught Biko attempting to steal firewood belonging to him. An argument ensued, which escalated into the tragic incident. However, the police boss emphasized that the suspect’s account represents only his version of events and that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court. Edebor stressed that acts capable of endangering human life would not be tolerated under any circumstances and condemned all forms of violence and jungle justice in the state.

In a separate incident, armed bandits attacked Pissa village in Niger State, resulting in three deaths and the destruction of homes. The military engaged the bandits during the Saturday morning assault, though details remain unclear. Uniport Student Arrested for Setting Lover Ablaze
In a similar case, police operatives arrested Uniport student Cynthia Chukwundah for allegedly setting her lover, Sunny Amadi, on fire during a domestic dispute in Choba, Rivers State. The 32-year-old victim died from severe burns at UPTH. Chukwundah, reportedly pregnant with his child, is hospitalized under police watch. Police confirmed the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to remain calm, promising to ensure justice is served.
