The remains of Very Rev. Monsignor Gabriel Sunday Osu, former Director of Social Communications for the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, were laid to rest yesterday in Lagos. He passed away at the age of 72, having served as a prominent media voice for over four decades in the Archdiocese, known for his extensive work in religious journalism and public relations.
Funeral Mass at Holy Cross Cathedral
The funeral mass was held at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, where the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos Metropolitan See, Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, paid tribute to the late monsignor. Archbishop Martins noted that Monsignor Osu endeared himself to many through his simplicity of expression, humor, and humble demeanor. He described him as a man deeply concerned about the common good and the welfare of everyone.
During his address, the Archbishop also called on security agencies to ensure that children can learn in a safe and conducive environment, free from trauma.
Colleagues and Family Remember a Mentor
Very Rev. (Fr.) Anthony Godonu, Director of Social Communications for the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, who worked alongside Monsignor Osu for several years before succeeding him, described the late monsignor as a father and mentor who was never angered by anything.
In his homily, Episcopal Vicar of the Catholic Church of the Divine Mercy in Lekki, Monsignor Pascal Nwaezeapu, reflected on life, death, resurrection, and the importance of silence before God. He emphasized that death is a certainty for all, and how one lives on earth determines eternal life or damnation.
The deceased's brother, Paul Osu, expressed the family's sense of loss but also their gratitude for the life he led. He described the late monsignor as a caring brother and a good man who left the world better than he found it.
