Tragic Drowning Incident in Ondo Community Claims Two Lives
Tragedy struck at Ominifon community in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State as two men lost their lives after entering a deep well in a desperate attempt to retrieve a mobile phone. The incident has left the entire community in shock and mourning.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Fatal Accident
The first victim, identified simply as Chinedu, accidentally dropped his mobile phone into the deep well. Determined to recover his valuable device, he entered the well but tragically fell back in while attempting to climb out after successfully retrieving the phone.
Upon hearing the commotion, 46-year-old Kayode Oluwakinse, popularly known as 'Super,' rushed to the scene from his home where he had been eating with his family. After learning that his family friend Chinedu was trapped in the well, Oluwakinse immediately decided to attempt a rescue.
Failed Rescue Attempt and Third Victim
Oluwakinse's wife provided a heartbreaking account of her husband's actions. "My husband quickly removed his clothes and slippers and decided to rescue him," she explained. "He went into the well with a ladder and rings that were inside the well, but unfortunately, he could not come out alive."
The tragedy deepened when a third man attempted to rescue Oluwakinse. Despite having a safety rope tied around his waist, this brave individual lost consciousness halfway down the well. Quick-thinking onlookers managed to pull him back up before he reached the bottom, potentially saving his life.
Aftermath and Investigation
The third man eventually regained consciousness and received immediate medical treatment. He is currently assisting police with their investigation into this tragic incident. The community remains in a state of shock as families and neighbors mourn the loss of two valuable members.
