Two women were killed by suspected gunmen in the Gero community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Monday, triggering angry protests from residents demanding better security and justice. The bodies were discovered early Monday in the area behind the Jos South Local Government Secretariat.
Residents Protest, Block Roads
Protesters, including women and youths, carried the bodies to the council secretariat, accusing authorities of failing to protect them from recurring attacks. They also blocked sections of the road leading to the secretariat, disrupting vehicular movement as they called for urgent government intervention and the arrest of those responsible.
Community Speaks Out
Mary Chollom, one of the protesters, described the incident as another painful reminder of persistent insecurity in Plateau State. “We are tired of burying our loved ones. These women did nothing to deserve this. Government and security agencies must take decisive action to stop these senseless killings and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” she said. She urged the federal and state governments to strengthen security in vulnerable communities and called for intensified surveillance to identify and prosecute attackers.
Security Response
Security personnel were later deployed to the Jos South Local Government Secretariat and surrounding areas to prevent a breakdown of law and order. Normalcy gradually returned to the community. Efforts to obtain an official response from the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages at the time of filing this report.
Ongoing Insecurity Concerns
The latest attack adds to a series of violent incidents that have continued to raise security concerns in parts of Plateau State, despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the violence.
