Ugandan international footballer David Owori, aged 27, was killed outside his home in Kampala after a gang wielding paving stones attacked him during an attempted robbery. The incident occurred when robbers tried to steal his mobile phone, and Owori resisted, leading to a fatal assault. He was rushed to a local medical facility and later transferred to a private facility in the city, but tragically died of his injuries on Wednesday, August 5.
Club SC Villa leads tributes and demands justice
Owori's club, SC Villa, released a statement mourning his death and calling for a thorough investigation. The statement read: "Sports Club Villa has called upon the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to urgently investigate and bring to justice those responsible for the tragic death of club captain David Owori, who succumbed to injuries sustained following a brutal assault by unknown assailants."
The club further urged authorities to "urgently pursue, apprehend, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime," describing Owori's passing as a devastating loss for both the club and the nation.
A leader and role model lost
SC Villa's statement highlighted Owori's character, noting that "Uganda has lost not only an accomplished footballer but also an exceptional leader and role model." It added: "This senseless act has robbed the club and the country of a committed captain and a promising sportsman, and it must not go unanswered."
The club remembered him as "a dedicated servant of SC Villa, a respected leader on and off the pitch, and a player whose commitment, professionalism, and passion for the badge inspired team-mates and supporters alike."
Football community mourns
The Ugandan Football Federation also paid tribute, describing Owori as "a true leader on and off the pitch." His career included stints in Europe, where he played for Spanish side Vélez CF and later Swedish club Utsiktens BK. He also represented the Ugandan national team.
SC Villa concluded its statement with a call for justice: "As the football community continues to mourn one of its finest leaders, SC Villa once again calls upon the authorities to deliver justice and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Sports Club Villa remain with David Owori’s family, friends, team-mates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
