A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) when unidentified masked gunmen shot and killed a student on the Ugbowo campus. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was sitting inside his GLK Mercedes Benz when the assailants approached and fired at close range.
Details of the Attack
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Two other individuals who were in the vehicle with the victim sustained injuries and were rushed to the University of Benin Health Care Center for medical treatment. The student had reportedly completed his examinations in the Political Science department approximately one hour before the attack.
Eyewitness Testimony
One student who witnessed the incident stated, "They shot him at close range and there was no way he could have survived the attack. Two others who were in the vehicle were also injured and rushed to the school's health care center." The atmosphere on campus has been one of shock and fear following the incident.
Police Response
Operatives from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters arrived at the scene to evacuate the remains of the victim. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Emmanuel, stated that the situation is still sketchy and that an official statement will be issued once more details are available. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
