UNIPORT Student Gets Death for Killing Girlfriend

The Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has delivered a landmark judgment, sentencing University of Port Harcourt student Damian Okoligwe to death by hanging for the brutal murder and dismemberment of his girlfriend, Justina Otuene.

Gruesome Details of the Crime

Justice Chinwe Nsirim Nwosu presided over the case that shocked the nation, detailing how the 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student committed the heinous act on October 20, 2023. The court heard how Okoligwe took the life of 300-level Biochemistry undergraduate Justina Otuene inside his residence in Mgbuoba, Obio Akpor Local Government Area.

The prosecution presented compelling evidence showing that after killing his girlfriend, Okoligwe dismembered her body and attempted to dispose of the remains using a wheelbarrow before being apprehended by authorities. The graphic nature of the crime sent shockwaves through the university community and beyond.

Court's Firm Ruling

In her ruling, Justice Nwosu declared that the prosecution had successfully established all essential elements of murder beyond reasonable doubt. The judge characterized Okoligwe's actions as "intentional, composed and coordinated", noting that the evidence presented showed no contradictions and clearly confirmed his role in the killing.

The court ordered that Okoligwe be hanged until death, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that has drawn national attention to campus violence and relationship crimes among young Nigerians.

Reactions to the Verdict

Prosecution counsel Charles Mbaba welcomed the judgment, telling journalists that it brought closure to the Otuene family. He emphasized that Justina was the only daughter of her parents and described the murder circumstances as "suggestive of ritual intentions."

"Justice has been done and is seen and felt to be done in respect of Justina Otuene," Mbaba stated. "We hope and believe that with this judgment, the soul of Justina can now have a peaceful repose. I also believe that this judgment will serve as a deterrent to youths who believe shortcuts in life are the only means to get rich quick."

Osatawaji Otuene, the victim's elder brother, expressed that the ruling brought comfort to the grieving family after months of anguish and uncertainty.

University's Response and Broader Implications

Prior to the sentencing, the University of Port Harcourt had taken decisive action by expelling Damian Okoligwe from the institution. Dean of Student Affairs Chima Wokocha, accompanied by Vice Chancellor Prof Owunari Georgewill, had visited the police station where the suspect was held, emphasizing the university's commitment to justice.

Wokocha stated that the university was "embarrassed by what had happened" and was ready to support every effort to bring justice for Tiffany (Justina's nickname). He assured the public that "the University will not stop the process of the law" and expressed concern about the institution's image following the gruesome incident.

The case has sparked broader conversations about campus safety, relationship violence, and the pursuit of dangerous shortcuts among Nigerian youth. It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the Nigerian judiciary's determination to deliver justice in even the most disturbing cases.
