Unizik Student Hospitalized After Boiling Water Attack Over Assault Allegation
A male student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik) has been hospitalized with severe burns after a female student allegedly poured boiling water on him. The incident occurred in an off-campus lodge following accusations of sexual assault.
Details of the Alleged Assault and Attack
According to accounts from students who spoke to media, the female student had previously complained that someone was entering her room to fondle her breasts while she slept. On February 21, at approximately 2 a.m., she reported being roused from sleep by someone touching her body again.
Upon waking, she claimed to have seen a person wearing only shorts run out of her room. After checking with her female roommate, who was outside avoiding the heat, she proceeded down the stairs where she encountered a male lodge mate named John, a 300-level student who was also topless and wearing shorts due to the high temperatures.
The Confrontation and Escalation
The female student directly asked John if he had entered her room to touch her while she slept. John became upset and questioned why she would accuse him of such an act, noting it was not the first time she had made serious allegations against him.
This led to a heated verbal altercation that drew other lodge mates as they argued into the night. After a while, the female student retreated to her room, and many assumed the conflict had ended.
The Violent Attack
Shortly after, residents heard loud screams from John. One student described the noise as so intense that she initially thought armed robbers had invaded the lodge. She mentioned being barely clothed due to the heat and fast asleep when the commotion began.
Those who rushed downstairs found John writhing in pain from burns after the female student had allegedly bathed him with hot water. A witness stated, "After an hour of 'who touch me, who no touch me,' and everywhere was already calm, she could not wait till the next day to report to Presido or something, she went to boil water and poured it on this boy."
Aftermath and Hospitalization
John was quickly taken to a hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life. A video shared with media shows him lying in a hospital bed with extensive bandages covering his chest, mid-riff, back, shoulder, arms, and parts of his legs.
Students have called for prayers for his recovery as he undergoes treatment for the severe burns. The incident has sparked discussions about campus safety and the handling of assault allegations among university students.
