An American diplomat has been found dead in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, the U.S. State Department confirmed on Wednesday. A Thai woman has been detained by police in connection with the incident, according to sources.
State Department Confirms Death
The U.S. State Department told the Associated Press that a diplomat serving at the U.S. Embassy in Yangon had died. The department refrained from providing further details about the circumstances or cause of death, citing respect for the family's privacy.
“Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time,” the department stated.
Police Treat Death as Possible Murder
Three individuals within Myanmar's diplomatic community, speaking on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization, revealed that Myanmar police are treating the death as a potential murder. The diplomat's body was discovered two weeks ago at a hotel approximately 1.5 kilometers (one mile) from the U.S. Embassy.
The hotel, which offers long-term rentals, is a popular accommodation choice for diplomats, businesspeople, and other international visitors. Myanmar police have not publicly commented on the case.
Thai Woman in Custody
Thailand's Foreign Ministry confirmed that it has provided consular assistance to the woman in custody and notified her family. The ministry declined to comment further on the matter.
