Power Installation Vandal Electrocuted in Enugu While Tampering with Substation

A vandal targeting electricity facilities operated by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) was electrocuted early yesterday morning in Enugu State, according to company officials. The incident, described as unfortunate by MEDL's Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, occurred at the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation located along Independence Avenue in Independence Layout, Enugu.

Details of the Electrocution Incident

Ezeh revealed that the body of the deceased was discovered within the substation premises. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vandal, along with accomplices, had successfully loosened two intermediate cables from the substation. He was in the process of removing a third cable when electricity supply was unexpectedly restored, leading to his immediate electrocution.

It is presumed that the deceased did not act alone, as two of the vandalised intermediate cables were missing from the scene, suggesting that his accomplices fled with them. Ezeh expressed deep concern over the escalating rate of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure across the network.

Impact of Vandalism on Service and Revenue

Such criminal activities not only severely impact MEDL's revenue but also adversely affect the quality of service delivered to customers. Ezeh emphasised that vandalism remains a major challenge that cannot be effectively addressed without the active support of customers, who are critical stakeholders in the power distribution ecosystem.

He called on customers to remain vigilant and collaborate with the company to prevent acts of vandalism that result in significant inconvenience and service disruptions. It is a battle we must all fight collectively because once these installations are vandalised, customers served by them are severely impacted, Ezeh stated.

Deterrent Message and Police Involvement

Ezeh added, It is hoped that the death of this young man will serve as a deterrent to others involved in such criminal activities. The electrocuted suspect's remains have been evacuated by the police and deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) morgue for further investigation and identification.

This incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with tampering with high-voltage electricity infrastructure and highlights the urgent need for community cooperation to safeguard public utilities.
