South Korean Woman Receives Seven-Year Sentence for Brutal Cafe Assault on Husband

A 58-year-old woman in South Korea has been handed a seven-year prison term for a horrific attack on her husband, during which she severed his penis in a cafe. The Incheon District Court delivered the judgment in January, following a case that prosecutors described as a premeditated assault fueled by suspicions of marital infidelity.

Premeditated Attack in Ganghwa Island Cafe

The violent incident unfolded in August 2024 at a coffee shop located in the Hwado-myeon district of Ganghwa Island. According to court documents, the 50-year-old victim had been drinking alone at the establishment and had fallen asleep when the assault occurred.

The woman, identified only as A in court records, was convicted of special aggravated bodily harm. The court heard that she had enlisted the assistance of her 40-year-old son-in-law, referred to as B, who entered the cafe and used rope and industrial tape to restrain the sleeping man.

Brutal Assault and Permanent Injuries

After her son-in-law secured the victim, A repeatedly stabbed her husband before using a sharp object to completely sever his penis. In a deliberate act that eliminated any possibility of surgical reattachment, she then flushed the severed organ down the cafe's toilet.

Emergency responders discovered the injured man and rushed him to a hospital, where he underwent surgery and survived the attack. However, the court noted that he sustained permanent physical damage along with severe psychological trauma as a result of the brutal assault.

Family Involvement and Legal Consequences

Police investigators revealed to the court that the woman had carefully planned the attack after becoming convinced her husband was being unfaithful. Her daughter was also involved in monitoring the victim's movements prior to the assault.

The couple's daughter faced separate legal consequences, receiving a fine of 3 million won (approximately £1,514) for hiring an unlicensed private investigator who used GPS technology to illegally track her father's whereabouts.

Despite the extreme nature of the violence, the victim reached a settlement with his wife and formally requested the court to show leniency during sentencing. The court acknowledged this request while still imposing substantial prison terms.

The son-in-law who assisted in restraining the victim received a four-year jail sentence for his role in the coordinated attack. Both defendants were sentenced by the Incheon District Court, bringing a measure of legal closure to a case that has shocked South Korean society.
