South African Court Sentences Wife and Ex-Lover to Life for Husband's Murder

The High Court of South Africa, Eastern Cape Division, sitting in Burgersdorp, has delivered a landmark verdict, sentencing a 50-year-old woman, Noxolo Nokuzola Nxilolo, and her 42-year-old ex-lover, Mzamo Ciko, to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of her husband, Sindezama January Nxilolo. The deceased, a 65-year-old traffic officer and moneylender, was killed in a meticulously planned contract killing orchestrated by the accused.

Details of the Conspiracy and Murder

According to a statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority on Thursday, March 12, 2026, the murder occurred on July 3, 2017, in Eureka, Burgersdorp, within the Joe Gqabi Magisterial District. The accused conspired with two hired assassins from the Western Cape to carry out the killing. At the time of the murder, Noxolo was 43 years old and married to the deceased, with their relationship having begun in 1999 and formalized in marriage in 2002. The couple had no children.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Noxolo frequently traveled to the Western Cape for fertility treatments, where she met Ciko, who was 35 years old at the time. Their romantic involvement led to the end of Ciko's marriage after his wife discovered the affair. When the deceased became aware of the relationship, Noxolo and Ciko decided to murder him to secure financial benefits, as Noxolo risked losing certain assets in the event of a divorce.

Execution of the Murder Plot

To execute their plan, the accused contracted two men from the Western Cape, agreeing to pay them for the murder. Ciko sourced two firearms and transported the hired killers in his vehicle from the Western Cape to Burgersdorp, showing them the deceased's residence. Noxolo's role was to inform Ciko and the assassins when her husband was at home.

After receiving confirmation from Noxolo, Ciko drove the hired killers to the house after nightfall and dropped them off nearby. The killers then called the deceased under the pretence of requesting a cash loan. When he came outside, one of the assassins opened fire, fatally shooting him. The assailants fled the scene, with one returning to the Western Cape with Ciko and the other remaining behind. The following day, the remaining killer visited Noxolo's home to obtain money for his return trip, which she provided, and Ciko later paid him his share of the contract fee.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

One of the hired killers, Lungile Ntungwana, aged 44, later reported the incident to authorities. He pleaded guilty to his role in the murder and was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment on September 1, 2021. The second assailant remains at large. Following the murder and Ntungwana's disclosure, both Noxolo and Ciko were arrested and released on bail pending trial.

During the trial, Senior State Advocate Sibusiso Mgenge argued that the murder was carefully planned, executed, and motivated entirely by financial gain. The court heard that after the deceased's death, Noxolo benefited more than R920,000 from his pension fund and approximately R320,000 from the sale of their house. Despite overwhelming evidence, including testimony from Ntungwana, Noxolo maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings, showing no remorse.

In the aggravation and mitigation stage, Noxolo informed the court that she suffers from spinal cord complications, depression since 2018, and high blood pressure. However, the State successfully proved that the accused acted in execution of a common purpose and conspired to murder the deceased.

Sentencing and Judicial Impact

Although there is no permanent High Court in Burgersdorp, the matter was finalized and sentenced in the town as part of a sitting of the High Court of South Africa, allowing residents to witness justice being delivered where the crime occurred. The accused were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and an additional five years' imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder. They were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Welcoming the sentence, the Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Barry Madolo, emphasized the importance of bringing court services closer to the community. He stated that the outcome demonstrates the justice system's firm stance against premeditated and contract killings. "This sentence sends a clear message that those who orchestrate and carry out contract killings will face the full might of the law. Bringing the court to the community also reinforces public confidence in the justice system by ensuring that justice is not only done, but seen to be done where the crime occurred," said Madolo.

The National Prosecuting Authority also welcomed the sentence, commending the court for delivering justice in the community. "This outcome underscores the NPA's commitment to ensuring that those who plan and carry out violent crimes for personal gain are held fully accountable. The NPA remains steadfast in its dedication to protecting the rights of victims, upholding the rule of law, and reinforcing public confidence in the justice system," the statement added.
