The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of a woman, Mrs. Ogechi John, for alleged child homicide. Mrs. John, who hails from Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was taken into custody by the police on Monday morning, May 11, 2026, for allegedly beating her stepdaughter, Ogechi Amanda John, aged 9, to death at their Nchatancha residence in the Emene area of Enugu metropolis.
Neighbors Report Ongoing Abuse
Neighbors reported that the tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2026. They noted that the late Miss Amanda had been a victim of constant and ruthless maltreatment at the hands of her stepmother. The community expressed shock and outrage over the repeated abuse that ultimately led to the child's death.
Government Response and Commitment to Justice
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development in Enugu State, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, expressed the state government's anger over the incident. She stated that the government would not relent until justice is served. “It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah Administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide. So, we swung into action on learning about this tragedy to ensure that the suspect was arrested,” she said.
Mrs. Enih further emphasized that the government would press for a thorough and expedited investigation to ensure that justice is not only done but done quickly. “Nobody should take another’s life and certainly not the life of any child in Enugu State. We condemn it in totality,” she added.
The arrest has brought some relief to the community, but many are calling for stronger measures to protect children from abuse. The case is currently under investigation, and the suspect is expected to face charges in court.
