A 26-year-old British woman, Isabel Anonia Barbra Eudora Rose, was sentenced to six years in prison by a Hong Kong court on Wednesday, July 22, after being convicted of blackmail and perverting the course of justice for falsely accusing a banker of rape and demanding £100,000 from him.
Details of the Case
Rose, from Hackney, East London, met the man, identified in court as X, while traveling in Thailand and flew to Hong Kong to meet him in 2024. The pair spent the night of February 1 together, after which Rose filed a false report claiming she had been raped. Although X was initially arrested, he was released without charge.
The court ruled that the pair had engaged in consensual intimate acts that night, and a medical examination could not confirm or disprove whether sexual intercourse had taken place.
Blackmail Demands
Days after the alleged assault, Rose asked X for £5,000, which he sent. She later demanded £100,000 while threatening to go to the police if he did not pay. Judge Adriana Noelle Tse Ching found her guilty of blackmail and perverting the course of public justice.
During sentencing, Judge Ching noted that Rose had blown kisses and waved to her mother as she was led away, stating she had “not shown an iota of remorse for her wicked behaviour.” The judge described X as an “honest, credible and reliable witness,” while calling Rose “dishonest, uncredible and unreliable.”
Sentencing and Imprisonment
Rose’s lawyer pleaded for leniency based on her clean criminal record and status as a foreigner, but Judge Ching rejected the argument, saying it was “crystal clear” that she had demanded the money. She was handed a starting sentence of five years for blackmail and three years for perverting justice, with one year to be served consecutively, resulting in a total of six years in prison.
Rose has been stranded in Hong Kong for the last two years, unable to leave or work. After the trial, she was sent to Tai Lam Correctional Institution, Hong Kong’s oldest maximum security women’s prison.
