Customs Personnel Targeted in Coordinated Attack by Suspected Drug Traffickers

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command based in Idiroko, has officially confirmed a violent assault on its officers by suspected armed drug traffickers. The incident unfolded in the Akokoro area of Iwoye, located within the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Details of the Ambush and Operational Interception

Zakaria Chado, the Command's official spokesperson, provided a detailed account of the attack through a statement released on Sunday from Idiroko. According to Chado, the confrontation occurred when customs officers, acting upon credible intelligence reports, successfully intercepted a large 12-tyre truck. This vehicle was suspected to be transporting a significant consignment of illicit drugs along with other prohibited items.

The operation took a dangerous turn on Thursday afternoon at approximately 4:00 p.m. when the suspects mobilized a substantial number of armed hoodlums to launch a coordinated assault on the customs patrol team. Before reinforcement units could reach the location, the attackers executed a well-planned obstruction strategy.

Strategic Obstruction and Violent Confrontation

In a deliberate attempt to hinder law enforcement efforts, the assailants established heavy barricades at approximately nine strategic points along access routes. This tactical move effectively blocked reinforcement teams from arriving promptly at the scene.

The attackers then opened fire on the customs officers, creating what Chado described as "a volatile and dangerous operational environment." During the exchange of gunfire, the assailants disabled a customs patrol vehicle by shooting at its tires, further complicating the officers' ability to respond effectively.

Casualties and Aftermath of the Attack

As a direct result of the violent confrontation, two Nigeria Customs Service officers sustained serious gunshot injuries. Both personnel are currently in critical condition and receiving intensive medical care at undisclosed healthcare facilities.

Exploiting the multiple barricades they had established, the suspected smugglers managed to flee the scene with the intercepted truck containing the suspected illicit drugs. The Nigeria Customs Service has confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been initiated to identify, track, and apprehend all individuals involved in planning and executing this attack on law enforcement officers.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by customs personnel in combating drug trafficking and smuggling operations along Nigeria's borders, particularly in regions like Ogun State where such criminal activities persist despite increased security measures.
