The Federal Government has issued a powerful call for a unified national effort to combat the increasing menace of fire incidents across Nigeria. The appeal was made by the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Olumide Samuel Adeyemi, during the closing ceremony of the National Fire Safety Week (NFSW) in Abuja.
A Call for a Proactive Safety Culture
Speaking at the event, which carried the theme "Building a Culture of Fire Safety in Nigeria: Overcoming the 'Not My Portion' Mentality," Adeyemi stressed that fire safety is a personal responsibility for every citizen. He identified the deeply ingrained 'Not My Portion' attitude as a major obstacle to building a strong preventive culture. "Fire safety begins with each of us," he asserted, urging Nigerians to move from denial to active preparedness.
Represented by Deputy Controller General Aliyu Tambari, the CG noted a positive shift, with Nigerians showing greater interest in safety measures. He revealed that the FFS plans to build on this momentum through expanded outreach programs, including sensitization drives in schools and markets, road shows, and practical fire drills.
2Baba Appointed as National Fire Ambassador
A major highlight of the event was the official decoration of iconic music star Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba or 2Face, as Nigeria's Fire Ambassador. The FFS explained that the artist's massive platform and influence make him uniquely positioned to connect with millions of Nigerians and promote messages of responsibility and vigilance.
In addition to this appointment, the service recognized and presented awards to several individuals and institutions for their outstanding contributions to fire safety initiatives in the country.
Modernization and Tribute to Fallen Heroes
Controller General Adeyemi also emphasized his commitment to continuous improvement within the Service. He stated that under his leadership, the FFS is dedicated to achieving higher levels of professionalism and responsiveness. He paid tribute to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and other partners for their unwavering support.
In a poignant moment, cheques were presented to beneficiaries under the Group Life Insurance Scheme, offering support to the families of fire service personnel who have died or been injured in the line of duty.
Other dignitaries, including the Director General of NIGCOMSAT, Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, and former CDCFIB Board Secretary, Dr. Alhassan Yakmut, echoed the sentiment that fire safety is a shared responsibility. Yakmut specifically called for an intensification of fire safety campaigns in rural communities, affirming the government's focus on reforming the fire service to meet global standards.
