A significant fire outbreak, ignited by a gas explosion, ravaged a foam manufacturing plant within the Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State, on Monday, January 12, 2026. The inferno, which began in the early morning, caused extensive damage to property valued at millions of naira.

Panic and Response at the Scene

The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m., sending billows of smoke and flames into the air. Kuwhede Vincent, a student of the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH) whose hostel is near the zone, recounted the terrifying moments. "We first saw smoke and then fire coming from the company," Vincent said. "We just grabbed our bags because we did not know what could happen next." He praised the prompt response of the fire service, whose efforts were crucial in containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to nearby student hostels in the Obanla area.

Official Statements and Safety Advisory

The Ogun State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the fire had been contained and that police operatives were deployed to the scene to maintain security. The public was urged to stay calm and avoid the vicinity. Meanwhile, the President of the OGITECH Students' Union, Ilo Fadilu Temitope, issued a statement signed by the Secretary, Moses Josephine, and PRO, Segbetin Sunday, advising students to observe strict safety precautions.

The union's advisory included:

  • Remaining indoors where safe and avoiding the affected area.
  • Keeping doors and windows closed if smoke is present.
  • Switching off electrical appliances and gas sources as a precautionary measure.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, acknowledged the situation and stated he would address it. However, the exact cause of the gas explosion remains under investigation.

Community Reeling from the Incident

Despite the successful containment operation, the fire incident instilled considerable fear and panic among students of OGITECH and residents of the adjoining Obanla community. Many scrambled for safety during the height of the outbreak, highlighting the potential risks posed by industrial facilities located close to residential and academic areas. The event underscores the critical importance of industrial safety protocols and emergency preparedness within free trade zones.
