A fierce nighttime blaze has caused extensive destruction at the popular Gombe timber market, known locally as Kasuwar Katako, situated near the Railway station in the state capital. The fire, which broke out on Monday night, also consumed a nearby mosque, sending shockwaves through the community.
Firefighters Battle Blaze for Over 30 Minutes
The inferno reportedly started after 8 pm on Monday, rapidly spreading through the market's wooden structures. A combined team of emergency responders, including firefighters from the Gombe State University (GSU), personnel from the federal fire service, and private water tanker operators, rushed to the scene. They engaged in a fierce battle for over 30 minutes before finally bringing the raging fire under control.
Initial reports indicate that numerous timber stores and shops were completely destroyed. However, the full extent of the damage and the precise number of affected stores remain undetermined as authorities continue their assessment.
Governor Expresses Grief, Orders Immediate Action
Governor Inuwa Yahaya has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident. In a statement released by his media aide, Isma'il Uba Misilli, the governor described the fire as both painful and distressing. He emphasized that the scale of the destruction represents a significant setback for the hardworking men and women whose livelihoods depend entirely on the market.
Governor Yahaya has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant agencies to move in immediately. Their mandate is threefold: to conduct a thorough assessment of the damage, investigate the cause of the fire, and provide urgent relief and support to cushion the impact on the victims.
Government Pledges Support and Future Prevention
While sympathizing with all affected traders and shop owners, Governor Inuwa Yahaya called for calm. He assured them that the government would take all necessary steps to mitigate their losses. Furthermore, he reiterated his administration's commitment to strengthening preventive measures to avert similar disasters in the future.
A key part of this plan, as stated by the governor, is the resolve to establish a fully equipped, state-of-the-art fire service office in Gombe. This new facility is intended to complement existing fire-fighting infrastructure across the state, aligning with the government's commitment to protecting lives, property, and investments.
The governor concluded his message by extending heartfelt sympathy to all victims and praying to Almighty Allah for continued protection over Gombe State and for comfort for those affected by this unfortunate event.
