A devastating gas explosion struck the Bioku-Alaadun area in Ibadan on Friday night, resulting in multiple fatalities and significant damage to properties.

Emergency Response and Incident Details

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency (OYSFA) confirmed the tragic incident, which occurred in the Ona Ara Local Government Area. The agency's General Manager, Yemi Akinyinka, stated that an emergency call was received at exactly 19:40 on Friday, November 21, 2025, from a Pastor Oyebamiji, alerting them to the explosion.

According to the report, the explosion happened while a gas tanker, with registration number LSR268YC, was discharging its contents. The tanker, loaded with 15 tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), was transferring the gas into a retail skid tank when the blast occurred.

Casualties and Damage Assessment

The explosion led to a significant number of casualties. Among those reported killed were the owner of the gas shop and several other individuals who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident.

The force of the blast damaged several structures, including two commercial buildings and one residential building. In a coordinated rescue effort, three persons were successfully rescued at the scene and handed over to a team of policemen from the Akanran Division.

Official Statements and Safety Warnings

Akinyinka praised the prompt response of the fire service personnel, who were led by CFS Adedeji (Mrs.) and deployed immediately. The operation was carried out jointly with a crew of firemen from the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command, which helped to contain the situation and prevent further catastrophe.

The Fire Service chairman used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to the public. He urged people to always observe safety precautions when handling petroleum products. He emphasized the critical importance of obtaining necessary approvals from the Fire Service, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), and other relevant stakeholders before installing gas tanks or cylinders to prevent such unnecessary explosions.

He assured the community that all necessary fire safety measures had been taken and that an investigation team would be dispatched to determine the root cause of the incident to prevent future occurrences. He also expressed appreciation for the presence of the Executive Chairman of Ona Ara Local Government, Dr. Temitope Kolapo, and urged residents to continue with their daily activities without fear.
