In a significant crackdown on human trafficking and cybercrime, Ghana's Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has rescued seven Nigerian nationals who were allegedly trafficked into the country and forced to participate in online fraud schemes.
Dramatic Rescue Operation
The rescue mission was executed on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Mataheko-Afienya as part of EOCO's ongoing Operation LIFELINE. The specialized intelligence-led anti-graft agency confirmed the operation in an official statement released on Monday, November 17, 2025.
During the coordinated swoop, officers arrested 10 individuals comprising three suspected traffickers and seven victims, all of whom are Nigerian nationals. The victims, aged between 17 and 30 years, had been lured to Ghana under false pretenses of legitimate employment opportunities.
Exploitative Conditions Uncovered
Investigations revealed that the young Nigerians were subjected to harsh and exploitative conditions while being compelled to carry out various online fraud schemes. Instead of the promised legitimate jobs, they found themselves trapped in cyber fraud operations against their will.
The rescue operation highlights the growing concern about cross-border human trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable youth with false employment promises.
Public Warning and Prevention Measures
EOCO has issued a strong warning to the public, urging increased vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities through its official hotlines and law enforcement channels.
The agency specifically cautioned landlords to thoroughly verify the backgrounds of foreign tenants before renting out properties to them. This measure aims to prevent criminal elements from using residential properties as bases for illegal operations.
EOCO reaffirmed its commitment to tackling organized crime and protecting vulnerable victims, emphasizing that persons found engaging in or facilitating cybercrime will be pursued and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The successful Operation LIFELINE rescue demonstrates Ghana's determination to combat human trafficking and cyber fraud while ensuring the protection of victims caught in these criminal networks.
