Edo State Slips to Third Position in Irregular Migration Returnees Ranking

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria has announced that Edo State has dropped from the top spot to third place on the irregular migration returnees' chart. This shift places Kano State in first position and Lagos State in second, according to recent data released over the weekend.

Chief of Mission Highlights Progress in Awareness Campaigns

Sharon Dimanche, Chief of Mission for IOM Nigeria, disclosed this development during an interactive session with journalists in Benin. She emphasized that as of 2017, Edo State was leading the list of irregular migration returnees, but increased awareness efforts have led to a significant decline.

Dimanche attributed the drop to enhanced awareness campaigns by IOM and its partners, which have educated communities about the dangers of irregular migration. She noted that these initiatives have played a crucial role in reducing the number of returnees from Edo State.

Support and Reintegration Efforts for Returnees

According to Dimanche, IOM Nigeria has assisted over 60,000 migrants in returning to Nigeria, with more than 9,000 of these returnees originating from Edo State. Since 2017, the organization has provided comprehensive support to these individuals.

  • Over 9,000 migrants from Edo have been supported to return home safely.
  • More than 8,000 returnees have received reintegration support to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
  • Over 1,100 victims of trafficking have been assisted.
  • More than 5,000 people have received psychosocial support to help them recover from trauma.

These efforts underscore IOM's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by returnees and promoting sustainable reintegration into society.

Implications for Migration Trends in Nigeria

The change in ranking reflects broader trends in migration patterns across Nigeria. While Edo State's drop to third place is a positive indicator of reduced irregular migration, the rise of Kano and Lagos to the top spots highlights ongoing challenges in other regions.

IOM Nigeria continues to work with local and international partners to implement programs that discourage irregular migration and support those affected. The organization's focus remains on creating safer migration pathways and providing essential services to returnees.

This development serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained awareness campaigns and collaborative efforts in mitigating the risks associated with irregular migration.
